Research Interests:

Dr. Heindel’s research interests are in the design and synthesis of therapeutic candidates. Recently his medicinal chemistry team has worked on hypoxic cell radiation sensitizers, controlled-release of chemotherapeutics from depot polymer backbones, selective inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase, and vasopressin antagonists. His group is also modifying tumor-associated monoclonal antibodies directed to colorectal cancers in order to attach anticancer drugs and thereby enhance uptake. Through multi-site collaborations screening results are obtained which have led to structure-activity correlations and hence to iterated structures with improved activity. Heindel's medicinal chemistry laboratory has been funded by State (Pennsylvania), Federal (NIH), and corporate sponsors and has generated 9 patents of which 4 have been licensed to pharmaceutical industry.
