Research Interests:

Major themes in Dr. Scheibel's research and teaching have been tropical medicine/infectious diseases with emphasis on the metabolism and chemotherapy of Protozoal and Helminthic disease including the rational design of new pharmacologic agents, their testing and employment in the field, especially in the areas where drug resistant parasites have emerged.  Dr. Scheibel worked and traveled extensively throughout all parts of Central and South America. His primary interests are international health and tropical medicine, public health and preventive medicine.  In recent years Dr. Scheibel's research and teaching in clinical pharmacology has focused on the practical use of therapeutic agents in the treatment of special populations of patients, such as the very young and elderly.  These studies are focused on the clinical aspects in wound healing.  Among the clinical trials he has conducted are studies comparing topical collagen with topical hydrocolloid in the treatment of pressure ulcers and the design of trials to test the efficacy of phenytoin treatments of pressure ulcers.
